ITF World Championships

Stoke Gifford TKD is pleased to announce Mr Billy Smith as our new World Silver Medallist!

After three hard fights against Canada, Russia & England, Billy found himself in his first World final against another Russian!  The Russian played a very cagey tactical game & after the 2 x 2 minute rounds it was a long weight for the Jury president to give the result which could have gone either way.  The umpire then stood & gave the win to the Russian. Although disappointed with the loss Billy & Miss Burridge were ecstatic with his achievement, another individual International medal to add to his Gold & Silver achieved in last years European Championships.

Billy also played an instrumental part in the Junior boys team Patterns & Sparring where he achieved two Bronze medals.

Miss Burridge travelled out as head of the UK delegation & a coach for England .

She also competed in  the 5th Degree individual patterns. The category which is typically small as there are not many adult  (-35 years) female 5th Degrees was a straight final between Miss Burridge & an Argentinean. As the designated pattern was pulled out (which could be any of the 23 patterns she knows) she didn’t feel confident, this showed as she made a mistake towards the end on the pattern & missed out as many as 10 moves. Angry with herself she gave her second choice pattern (which has 72 moves) her all.  Unfortunately even with a strong 2nd pattern the mistakes made in the first were too great & the win was given to the Argentinean. Miss Burridge was disappointed with her performance, but really pleased to be back competing at an international competition & immensely proud of dedicated student Billy’s achievement.

Family & Stoke Gifford students Sarah, Chloe & Ben Baker-Attwood took a break from their Canadian holiday to participate in the World Festival that had been organised to run along side the World championships aimed at competitors that were not eligible grade & age wise for the World Championships. The family were very successful & bringing back a hoard of bling.

Sarah Baker-Attwood—Gold Patterns, Silver Sparring, Bronze Power

Chloe Baker-Attwood—Bronze Patterns, Bronze Power

Ben Baker-Attwood—Silver Patterns, Bronze Sparring, Bronze Power

Congratulations guys!

A massive thanks goes to all of the UK ITF supporters especially Alison May, John & Claire Smith from Stoke Gifford TKD.

Miss Burridge, Billy & the rest of the club will now look forward to the UK ITF British Championships which will be hosting not only UK competitors but also students from, Ireland, Holland, Spain, Italy & Hong Kong!

Stoke Gifford TKD was very proud to have dedicated student Miss Phoebe Grandfield 2nd degree representing the club this weekend along with Instructor Miss Burridge at the Grand Master Choi Jung Hwa IIC held in London hosted by Master Trevor Nicholls & the UK ITF.

The course was held over two days, with students & Master Instructors ranging from 2nd kup to 8th Degree all training together. Miss Burridge & Miss Grandfield were able to meet up with old colleagues & also make friends with new ones from all around the world.

The weekend was both physically & mentally demanding, with Grand Master Choi emphasising the importance of power & speed when performing all of our movements in particular kicks.

Along with all the hard work we were all lucky to also spend some relaxation time with Grand Master Choi at an evening banquet. Master Nicholls thanked Master Choi for his hard work & attendance & presented him with a gift from UK ITF. Miss Burridge took this opportunity in the presence of Grand Master Choi & Master Nicholls to present a surprised Miss Grandfield with some awards that she had achieved last year. Grand Master Choi then asked Miss Grandfield for a closer look so invited her to bring her awards to his table! Miss Burridge along with the other development committee representatives were presented with a gift from Master Nicholls as an appreciation for all the hard work she has put into the Tournament committee so far.

The weekend was finished off with some individual photo’s with Grand Master Choi & Master Nicholls. A great souvenir to a memorable weekend.

A big thank you goes to UK ITF, Master Nicholls & Ashley Nicholls for all their hard work in organising the event.

We look forward to our next Taekwon-do seminar with Master Trevor Nicholls in Bristol this coming April.

A massive well done goes to the new Stoke Gifford degree grade. Stamatis Lomvardos performed at a regional degree grading headed by Master Nicholls, Master Deedigan & Mr Flaherty in Stoke Gifford, Bristol.

The day began with a two hour Master Nicholls seminar, which was as always very physically demanding. Stamatis then had very a short break before a four hour grading which included patterns, self defence sparring & power breaking. The expectations from the Master examiners were high, & I’m pleased to say that Stamatis excelled in his indomitable spirit & gave 100% to everything that was thrown at him.

Stamatis then had a very patient wait to get his results at his next training session & was very pleased to receive his 1st Degree belt presented by Miss Burridge

Congratulations
